Strategy and Business Policy

Mark DesJardine’s research interests are related to strategic decision making, corporate short-termism, and business sustainability. In his recent work, Mark is exploring how pressures from financial market actors, including security analysts, hedge fund activists, and investors, affect the temporal perceptions and strategic decisions of corporate managers, such as their investments in capital projects and whether they make socially responsible investments. In another stream of research he studies the relationship between organizational resilience and efficiency. In general, his work focuses on the trade-offs between the short-term financial success and the long-term welfare of business and society.

Mark’s work has received several awards and has been published in the Journal of Management , Strategic Organization , and Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings , and covered in The Guardian and Huffington Post . Most recently, Mark was awarded the Governor General's Gold Medal Award for graduating with the highest academic standing and most significant research among all graduate students at Western University (5,000+ students). His research has received several other awards, including the Sumantra Ghoshal Research and Practice Award (AoM, BPS Division) for sole-authored work, People’s Choice Award (ARCS), Best Paper Prizes (ARCS/Ivey) and the Strategic Research Foundation Dissertation Scholarship (SMS), among others.

Mark has published teaching cases and currently teaches and serves as the track coordinator for the core Strategic Management course in the MBA program at HEC Paris. 

Prior to joining HEC Paris, Mark worked in investor relations and consulting. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours from Acadia University and Ph.D. in Strategy and Sustainability from the Ivey Business School, Western University. He is a member of the Strategic Management Society, Academy of Management, Alliance for Research on Corporate Sustainability, and the CFA Institute.
