'We need effective citizen-lobbyists – not just likers, followers or even marchers – more than ever. I have no hesitation in lobbying you to read this book.'Bill Emmott, former editor in chief, the EconomistMany democratic societies are experiencing a crisis of faith. Citizens are making clear their frustration with their supposedly representative governments, which instead seem driven by the interests of big business, powerful individuals and wealthy lobby groups. What can we do about it? How do we fix democracy and get our voices heard? The answer, argues Alberto Alemanno, is to become change-makers – citizen lobbyists. By using our skills and talents and mobilizing others, we can bring about social and political change. Whoever you are, you’ve got power, and this book will show you how to unleash it.From successfully challenging Facebook’s use of private data to abolishing EU mobile phone roaming charges, Alberto highlights the stories of those who have lobbied for change, and shows how you can follow in their footsteps, whether you want to influence immigration policy, put pressure on big business or protect your local community

With the law of 20 May 2016, n. 76 and the legislative decrees of 19 January 2017, nos. 5, 6 and 7 the Italian legislator has finally proceeded to offer recognition and legal protection to homosexual unions through the establishment of the civil union between persons of the same sex, an occasion that has considered propitious to introduce a discipline of de facto cohabitation. It has thus opted for a plurality of family models (marriage, civil union, in fact both heterosexual and homosexual cohabitation), with a reform that, after a long lasting wait, puts the family right on the move today. The work, one year after the approval of the law n. 76 and now made with a regulatory framework thanks to decrees entered into force on 11 February 2017, as well as the decree of the Ministry of the Interior February 27, 2017, offers a comprehensive analysis of legislative innovations by examining the interpretive perspectives suggested by the doctrine and the application solutions proposed by the first jurisprudence, with the relative repercussions and difficulties. The volume also investigates issues related to filiation, with a review of the provisions on adoption, medically assisted procreation and gestation for others or surrogate motherhood, on which the law is grafted by urging a renewed reflection on legal categories up to today discounted. with its relapses and difficulties. Routledge Handbook of Risk Studies

Routledge Handbook of Risk Studies

2016

It is over 40 years since we began to reflect upon risk in a more social than technological and economic fashion, firstly making sense of the gap between expert and public assessment of risks, such as to our health and environment. With fixed certainties of the past eroded and the technological leaps of ‘big data’, ours is truly an age of risk, uncertainty and probability - from Google’s logarithms to the daily management of personal lifestyle risks. Academic reflection and research has kept pace with these dizzying developments but remains an intellectually fragmented field, shaped by professional imperatives and disciplinary boundaries, from risk analysis to regulation and social research. This is the first attempt to draw together and define risk studies, through a definitive collection written by the leading scholars in the field. It will be an indispensable resource for the many scholars, students and professionals engaging with risk but lacking a resource to draw it all together
