A fundamental question in strategic management is how organization affects firms'abilities to develop capabilities important to performance. Alliances are an important
organizational approach that many firms utilize toward this objective. While alliances provide many benefits they also present challenges, including the development and protection of
knowledge. This paper examines how ownership and colocation aid firms in meeting desired alliance performance objectives. Building on research in TCE and the KBV we identify four
distinct alliances and propose that the influence of these arrangements on performance is dependent on the nature of the alliance activity. Using a sample of 664 alliances in the
semiconductor industry and a polychotomous two-stage analysis, we find the scope and difficulty of alliance activities determine not only selection, but also subsequent technological performance.
