In this paper, we

assess the effects of an organization's change actions on external evaluations by critics – an essential but under-studied

strategic outcome. We distinguish and measure concurrently the influence of code-preserving and code-violating changes. We

define code-preserving changes as a variation in the firm's product range that preserves the social code representative of

the form within which the firm positions its offering. By contrast, a code-violating change corresponds to a variation in the

product range that breaks with past signals and embraces a new social code. Empirical results from the French haute cuisine

field show that code-violating changes enhance a restaurant's evaluations and that older or higher-status restaurants benefit

less from that positive effect than younger or lower-status restaurants. In addition, critics' evaluation increases when

restaurants undertake more code-preserving changes than their direct competitors. These results enable us to reflect on

code-changes strategies and their relations with alternative strategic outcomes.
