Course of study

Do you need to speak French to join the Program?
No, speaking French is not an entry requirement for the Program.

Is the program taught in English or French?
All core courses are taught in English.
Electives are available in both French and English.


I speak French. Will I have the opportunity to study in French as well?
In all our Programs students with a good level in French are offered the possibility to take some electives in French.
Are all the courses in the Program mandatory?
All the courses in this program are mandatory.
What is a Certificate and what is the Portfolio?
A certificate corresponds to a group of courses with a sectorial focus on a specific area. These courses provide an in-depth understanding of the structure, management, economics and finance related to these sectors. All the certificates are chaired by a company and students who successfully complete all the courses are awarded an additional certificate on top of their Master of Science Degree.
Certificates offered for 2009/2010:
- Energy and Finance chaired by Deloitte and Société Générale
- Real Estate chaired by Unibail and Rodamco
- Social Business chaired by Danone
- Luxury Strategies (company to be confirmed)
Does the Certificate have to be related to my initial Study Program?
No, students may choose to gain extra credit from another field of studies to their initial study program.

Can I learn French while studying at HEC?
Yes, we offer all international students the possibility to take a French language course from beginner to proficiency level. All students are invited to take the TEF (Test d'Evaluation de Français).

What other languages are available?
Students may take courses in other languages such as Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Russian and Arabic under the condition that it does not overlap with courses from the Program.

Admission Process

How do I apply for the Program?
By filling in the online application available on the web-site

What documents are required for my application?
All candidates must submit by the given deadline:
- Official Academic Transcripts in English
- Two letters of recommendation from Professors
- A résumé
- Official test score of GMAT
- Official test score of TOEFL or IELTS (not required from English natives and from students who studied their Degree in English language).
- A certified proof of identity in English or French
- The fee-payment agreement

What is the minimum GMAT score required?
2010/2011 will be the inaugural year for this degree. Therefore, an average score is not yet available.
What is the minimum GRE score required?

I hold the TAGEMAGE. Can I apply for the Program?
No, unfortunately we do not accept TAGEMAGE.
What are the requirements for IETLS / TOEFL?
The minimum score for IELTS is 7.5 and for TOEFL: 100 web-based, 250 computer-based.
What is the TOEFL / IELTS registration code?
TOEFL Institution code: 0718; Department code: 02

IELTS: For the time being IELTS scores must be sent directly to HEC by the candidate.
What are the GMAT and GRE registration codes?
GMAT: OTL-6C-89

GRE: School code: 3623, Department code: 4205
How long are GMAT and GRE scores valid?
At HEC Paris we accept GRE and GMAT scores no older than 3 years even though the official validity is 5 years.
I studied in English for my bachelor. Do I need to take a language test?
No, but candidates must provide us with a certificate from their university stating that they studied the degree in English.
Is there a disadvantage in applying for a later session?
No, all sessions are open to motivated candidates.
Is a special format required for recommendation letters?
No, referees are welcome to write on letterhead paper from the University.
How do I send the recommendation letters?
You have two options:
  1. The referee may send the letters directly to the MSc Admissions Office
  2. The candidate may join the letter to the other supporting documents. In this case the letter must be put in a sealed envelope (signed on the back by the referee).
I have completed an internship; may I join a third letter of recommendation from my employer?
Yes, a third letter of recommendation from a professional is welcome
I have chosen my application session, but my file was not submitted online; will my application be taken into account?
No, all applications must be complete and all documents must be sent to HEC by the chosen deadline.

Uncompleted applications may be transferred to the following session if requested by the candidate.

Financial Matters

How much is the application fee?
The application fee is 75€, and must be paid either by Credit card or wire transfer when you submit your application. You must fill in the document named "Payment Agreement" available on our on-line application.
How much are the tuition fees (2010-2011)?
- 16,000 € for the MISD program
This is payable in three instalments (upon confirmation, in mid-September and mid-November)

Does HEC offer accommodation?
Yes, HEC offers all international students the possibility to live on campus.
Accommodation (2009-2010):
Registration fees: 130€
Refundable deposit: 400€ (Payable upon reservation)
1. Furnished individual rooms with common bathroom to be shared between two rooms (18 square meters with balcony): 405€/month.
No kitchen facilities.
2. Furnished 2 room apartment with small kitchen facility and bathroom: 590€/month NB: These apartments cannot be rented individually. Students must meet before applying for this option and put both names on the registration form. Priority will be given to students who need access to a kitchen for health reasons.
3. Furnished individual rooms (16 square meters) with private bathroom: 539€/month. NB: This option is available only to students spending the entire academic year on campus.
We do not offer kitchen facilities in the individual rooms.
Grant for accommodation (approximately 170€/month): Every international student studying in France, can apply for the "Allocation de logement". All students receive this grant under the condition that they can show their resident's permit if required (depending on students' nationality). To receive this grant, students must have opened a bank account in French Bank. Students sharing an apartment will only receive one grant.


What about living expenses?
Linving expenses vary depending on where you live (on campus or not). You should count on approximately 950 € per month including housing, food, off-campus sports activites and leisure.
Mandatory Additional fees:
Participation in on-campus sports activities: 104€ payable together with the first instalment.
Health insurance:
Non-European students are required to purchase the French Health Insurance (annual fee: 198€ 2009/2010). In addition all students are required to bring local travel insurance or to purchase the Insurance from the CCIP (Chamber of Commerce and Industry) of 15€ (annual fee) .
Civil liability and housing insurance:
Students will either have to prove that they have civil liability insurance included in their travel insurance, or purchase the CCIP insurance.
Students must also provide the housing office with proof of housing insurance. This insurance is often sold together with the Credit Card pack when opening a bank account.


What financial support is available for students?
International students are eligible for a merit-based scholarship once admitted to HEC. It is based on the academic excellence of the last degree obtained. We recommend students check with the French Embassy or local Campusfrance in their home country about local governmental scholarship possibilities.

A few part-time jobs are available on campus.

Can I get a bank loan in France?
Banks do offer loans but they often require you to have a guarantor living in France. We suggest that you contact your local bank in your home country. They often have close links to certain banks in France.

What are the career services available?

Will I have a chance to meet with companies during the program?
Yes. Specific events are organized throughout the year:
- Career Forum: a unique on-campus recruitment event during which students and over 100 companies meet over a two-day period.
- Finance Forum (in October)
- Consulting Forum (in November)
Which career paths are available to HEC graduates?
HEC graduates have numerous career options. They are mostly interested in opportunities in Finance, Consulting, Marketing, Sales, Audit, Law, and Management Control.
It is said that the alumni network is a valuable asset for job searching. Will I get to meet them during my stay at HEC?
HEC Alumni often come to the HEC campus to talk about their jobs and companies. They will help you define your professional goals and guide you in your search for jobs and internships. Every HEC student is considered as a junior member of the association and can therefore have access to the whole network.

Campus

Can students live off campus?
Yes, students can rent apartments either in Jouy en Josas (close to campus), in Versailles or in Paris. We cannot guarantee accommodation off campus and we must admit that housing especially in Paris is very expensive.

Can we play sports at HEC?
HEC has a 1600 m² sports hall (tennis, basketball, handball, volleyball, badminton and climbing wall) and 8000 m² of outdoor fields including 2 soccer fields (1 hard surface and 1 turf) a rugby field, tracks and fields, and a 9-hole golf course. All students are invited to join whether at competitive or beginner's level (provided that matches do not interfere with the course requirements).
Are there student clubs at HEC?
Yes, over 100 clubs exist in different categories: sports, professional activities, culture, humanitarian aid, finance, public affairs and more. We suggest that all students participate in at least two associations See the website
