HEC Paris at the World Knowledge Forum 2016

  • HEC Paris at the World Knowledge Forum 2016

Pierre DUSSAUGE, Professor of Strategy and Business Policy at HEC Paris, will be speaking at this year's World Knowledge Forum, with his talk entitled "How to Globalize Successfully".

One of the major changes that has affected the world of business in the last 30 years is what has been called "globalization". However, what exactly this term covers is highly ambiguous, and more importantly, the implications for firm strategy and management are often poorly understood, as are the factors that lead certain industries to become highly globalized over a short period of time. We will therefore start out by defining what globalization really is, from a management and strategy perspective, identifying those factors that drive - or prevent - the globalization of certain industries, and examine the implications of this for individual firms.

In an increasingly globalized economy, multinational companies have a key role to play. However, few companies have been fully successful in managing their activities across borders. Multinational companies must at the same time adapt to different local contexts and overcome the liability of foreignness by integrating some of their activities on a global basis. This local adaptation-global integration framework raises the issues of learning, innovation and strategic control in multinational companies.

We will then go on to discuss the fundamental challenge posed by the "liability of foreignness", examine the possible strategic options available to multinational companies, examine the key factors driving the adaptation/integration tradeoff, identify all the sources of advantage global companies can leverage, and finally outline the challenges of learning, innovation, and control in global companies.
