Investing in European electricity markets today: challenges and opportunities

The HEC Energy & Finance Chair, sponsored by Deloitte and Société Générale, is pleased to invite you to a conference organized in cooperation with the European Electricity Markets Chair of the University Paris-Dauphine.

  • Over the past few years, the return on investments in the electricity sector has come under pressure, with the wholesale electricity price decrease, competition from renewables capacity development subsidized on a large scale and weak carbon prices.

Two cross-cutting questions will introduce the proceedings:
    1. Are current pressures on returns forcing a change in the capital structure of electricity producers?2. Are current low levels of investment a result of exogenous, structural forces or of the institutional particularities of the current European market design? Which regulatory changes may improve the investment climate?

  • Time: 2-7pm
  • Where: University Paris-Dauphine: Raymond Aron room (2nd floor)

Introducing four exceptional social entrepreneurs from the Philippines

Dylan Wilk, Fabien Courteille and Freddie Tinga will be in attendance along with Tony Meloto, in what promises to be an extraordinary evening.

  • Tony Meloto is CEO and founder of Gawad Kalinga (GK), a humanitarian organization that has tasked itself with the fight to eradicate poverty in the Philippines. Their philosophy is one of building empowered, united communities to ensure long-term, sustainable development.

Their work is recognized worldwide, and ‘Uncle Tony’ has won numerous international awards including the 2012 Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship, and the 2012 Entrepreneur for the World Award at the World Entrepreneurship Forum in Lyon.

In 2010, GK launched the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) to serve as an incubator for young social entrepreneurs in the Philippines, inspiring local and international businesses to create jobs.

To date, GK-CSI has incubated several successful social enterprises. Among them, Dylan Wilk created Human Nature (specializing in organic cosmetics, no. 1 in the industry in the Philippines for five years), Fabien Courteille founded Plush & Play (maker of plush toys), while Freddie Tinga co-founded Global Electric Transformation, a company that develops COMET electric buses to replace the highly polluting traditional Jeepneys. He has come together with GK to coach and train drivers who are currently at risk of poverty.
