‘France is in need of a dose of Thatcherism'

Following the death of Margaret Thatcher, former UK Prime Minister, many people in France have spoken about the economic policies imposed on the UK during her time. Tomasz Michalski, Professor of Economics at HEC Paris, suggests that perhaps France is in need of some ‘Thatcherism’. As unemployment rises with public debt and we see more trade unions protesting jobs cuts, France looks as though it is heading in the same direction as the UK was before Thatcher stepped in. Michalski suggests that France is ‘in need of product market competition’, rather than ‘monopolization’, its present day market structure.
