HEC Paris makes its entrance into the 2011 Shanghai Rankings

3 October 2011

Established since 2003 by the Jiao Tong University, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, draws up a list of the best universities in the world every year.

In addition to the general rankings, which continue to be dominated by American universities, two other types of rankings measure the establishments’ performance according to fields (ARWU – Field*) and individual subjects (ARWU – Subject*) taught. It is in this last category that HEC Paris has made its entrance, being placed for the first time in the top 100 best institutions in “Economics and Business” (in the 76_100 grouping).

Whilst the criteria for the world rankings tend to favor larger scale establishments and more generally the Anglo-Saxon university system, thus excluding the possibility for any pertinent comparison with the business school model, this third type of ranking focuses more on disciplinary excellence. In each case, research plays a predominant role. HEC Paris’ entry into this ranking therefore constitutes a real mark of recognition for both its expertise and for the quality of the scientific work that its faculty carries out.
