HEC’s Sustainable Business Conference celebrates ten years of thinking green!

2 April 2013

This year the conference hosted on March 22 by HEC Paris, BeCitizen, the GDF SUEZ Chair and the Center for research on Society and Organizations (SnO), brought together over 30 prominent sustainability experts, business leaders, NGOs and academics. Speakers included Professor Rodolphe Durand of HEC Paris, Professor Ioannis Ioannou of London Business School, Robert Eccles, Professor of Management Practice at Harvard Business School, Jean-Marie Dauger GDF Suez Executive Vice President and Maximilien Rouer, President and Co-Founder of BeCitizen.

For its 10th anniversary, this year’s theme – “From the green line to the bottom line: creating company value through sustainability” – reinforces the idea of leveraging sustainability and its business benefits. The conference was organized around three key themes: sustainable opportunities in global markets, sustainable business models and integrated reporting.

As the competitive landscape responds to sustainability challenges, companies must think in new ways about their business models. Panels explored opportunities at the Bottom-of-the-Pyramid (BoP) and within advanced economies such as frugal, reverse and clean-tech innovations to reduce excessive energy and resource consumption in advanced economies.

“Companies are challenged to integrate sustainability into their core business practices. Ensuring social and environmental initiatives creates internal benefits for the company,” says Bernard Garrette, Associate Dean HEC Paris and Director of the MBA program.

HEC Paris professor Rodolphe Durand explained the impact of business sustainability on short and long term performance and underlined that sustainability does pay off in terms of operational and financial performance in the long run. Panels also addressed the value and necessity of integrated reporting, which helps companies demonstrate the relationship between non-financial indicators and financial performance.
