HEC Paris hosts ‘Energy Major’

28 participants have recently taken part in the first of two ‘Energy Major’ modules hosted by HEC Paris in Qatar. The module, organized in partnership with the Total Chair in Energy and Management, offered lectures, workshops, presentations and dinner events to its participants. The Energy Major is one of eight majors that HEC Paris Executive MBA students can choose from and the second module is due to take place soon in Paris.

Following recent news about whether or not Higher Education Institutions shouldbe teaching their courses entirely in English, the local.fr has interviewed Kevyn Yong, a Professor of Organizational Behavior at HEC Paris. Yong, originally from Singapore, has also taught in the US, and has found that his classes in France are significantly more culturally diverse and with more of a gender balance. He enjoys teaching in France because he can do it in the way that he likes. Yong recognizes the concerns expressed about the possible dilution of the French language if classes are only taught in English. However, he also believes that the language of academia is English and that being able to work in English and also speak French is an invaluable skill.

As France officially enters recession, the European Commission believes that a change in Parisian attitude is needed to help recover the economy. As its economy declines, some fear that France’s strong position in Europe is under threat. Laurent Calvet, Finance Professor at HEC Paris, believes that, like any country that has been under-performing for many years, its influence may deteriorate. He argues that in order for France to hold its position, it must clear its debt and reduce taxes for the time-being. José Manuel Barroso, Chief of the European Commission, believes that France must adapt to globalization.

HEC Paris, Salam sign MoU for training

HEC Paris in Qatar has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Salam International Investment Limited which aims to integrate executives at Salam International into HEC Paris talent program in Qatar and internationally. Bernard Ramanantsoa, Dean of HEC Paris, looks forward to developing the relationship between HEC Paris and Salam International.

International MBAT Sports Competition Begins Today!

The 23rd edition of the renowned MBA Tournament took place from the 9th -12th May, during which over 1500 MBA students from all over Europe gathered at HEC Paris to take part. Other than hosting games during the day, HEC Paris held a black-tie Casino Royale themed ball, a Woodstock-themed Battle of the Bands competition and a Havana Nights salsa contest. The organizing team was honored to welcome students from Harvard who had travelled across the Atlantic to take part in the games. Spokesperson Impreet Natt, MBAT organizer and HEC Paris MBA student says that Harvard’s participation “emphasizes [the] goal of collaborating with international business schools”.

Among these graduates are Dan Serfaty, CEO of Viadeo, the world’s second largest professional social network after LinkedIn. Serfaty now lives in Beijing where his start-up is becoming increasingly popular. Alongside is Bertrand Jelensperger, owner of LaFourchette.com, an easy-to-use guide of France’s gastronomy.

This year, Harvard Business School will also be sending a team over to take part in the tournament, and questions have arisen as to which event they will participate in. Will they make a journey to Paris to play “soccer”, and follow in David Beckham’s footsteps? Jean-Noël Kapferer, professor of Marketing at HEC Paris, points out that David Beckham is not only a player, but a brand and therefore represents something of greater value. Perhaps the Harvard Business School team will display the same success.
