SMS 2014 Madrid extension on “Public-Private Governance, Social Value and Innovative Organizational Design”

  • When: 19/09/2014
  • Where: Paris

Context: The Extensions are separate, topical workshops are individually organized in a variety of cities that are easily reached from the main conference location. They are aimed at furthering the scientific debate on a specific topic in smaller workshop-type settings. The Extensions represent opportunities for attendees of the main SMS conference to share and discuss emerging ideas in an interesting and enjoyable setting. They are open to be attended by additional local scholars and will offer opportunities to establish or develop collaborations with other scholars. Typically, these one-day workshops are organized in conjunction with a local university and will be held before and after the main SMS conference.

This extension conference was organized by  Bertrand Quelin (HEC Paris) and Ilze Kivleniece (Imperial College Business School) in Paris. The aim of the conference extension was to bring together strategy and organization science scholars working on research areas that address an increasingly diverse set of economic interactions between firms and public or socially oriented organizations. The spectrum of themes covered in the workshop include public private partnerships, collaborative arrangements and social ventures, and their implications in terms of firm performance, as well as broader social value and public welfare. In terms of theoretical domains, it aims to draw together and cross-fertilize on the burgeoning set of studies that exist on public-private interaction from the perspectives of institutional environment and political strategy, contractual and firm boundary theory, public entrepreneurship, as well as innovation and social value perspectives. The topics which were discussed during the workshop are related to the forthcoming Special Issue in the Journal of Management Studies, "Public-Private Collaboration, Hybrid Organizational Design and Social Value".
