SnO at European Venture Philanthropy Association Annuel Conference : Guiding Lights26 January 2018
The Society & Organizations (SnO) Center has recently joined European Venture Philanthropy Association (EVPA, hereafter). EVPA is a quite diverse community comprising of different types of organizations that are interested in and/or practicing venture philanthropy and social investment across Europe. By making connections with various actors in venture philanthropy and social investment tighter, the SnO Center is expecting to advance its knowledge on social impact as well as to contribute to the community with its unique insight on social impact.
As the first step, the SnO Center, represented by Sookyoung Lee, a SnO Research Fellow, participated in the EVPA Annual Conference held in Oslo, Norway from November 9 to November 10, 2018.
The SnO Center has been actively involved in the discussions on current issues in venture philanthropy with diverse organizations including venture philanthropy funds, social investors, grant-making foundations, impact investing funds, professional service firms, banks and business schools.
The most prominent issues in both formal and informal discussions at the conference were :
1) increasing social impact and
2) realizing self-sustainability of beneficiary communities.
Participants had a shared opinion that social investors should take bold risk in order to solve huge problems among beneficiaries. They all sought to aid beneficiary communities to build a self-sustainable ecosystem quickly not only to retain investors but also to offer beneficiaries increased continuous support.
Many participants showed strong interest in the SnO Center’s work on social impact and anticipated that accurate assessment of social impact would help practitioners make their social impact much more impactful.
