Over the years, HEC Paris has multiplied its initiatives in sustainable development and societal innovation that all form part of an organizational learning process which the school seeks to further  strengthen and develop, thery positioning societal and environmental issues at the heart of its strategy.

Today, 2.5 billion people live on less than $2 US per day.  With the impact of environmental and demographic changes, poverty levels threaten to rise to 50% by 2050.

Conventional business model conceptions, which tend to focus on maximising profit above all else, often fail to address these socio-political and environmental issues and may, in certain cases, exacerbate poverty.

It is therefore increasingly necessary to question capitalism’s role within society and to search for innovative business models that simultaneously enable the creation of both wealth and social good.

What is the aim of the Chair?

The Social Business/Enterprise and Poverty Chair aims to take up this challenge. The Chair seeks to promote social business by an action that is threefold:

TEACHING: Training a new generation of managers, aware of societal challenges and who aspire to be part of the solution, regardless of thier professional activity.

RESEARCH: Developing quality research on strategic innovation in societal fields on the theme of social business, and the ways in which business can fight poverty.

ACTION RESEARCH: Contributing to an inclusive economy, in France and in other developed countries as well as in developing countries. This initiative brings together HEC academics, large firms, government members and heads of the non-profit organizations with the objective of alleviating poverty through business.
