FX Structuring Desk, Paris, Calyon

Could you give us a brief summary of your career so far and your current position with Calyon?

After an engineering diploma (HEI) in 1994 and the International Finance Specialized Master in 1995, I started my career with Crédit Agricole Indosuez as a foreign exchange options trader in Hong Kong, then as a fixed income trader in Paris. In 1999, I joined Hiram Finance as a market finance consultant. In 2001, I went into alternative management with Barep Asset Management, where I was head of Interest Rates / Foreign Exchange funds; then in 2005 I joined Robeco as head of money market and dynamic money market funds. And since 2006 I have been head of the foreign exchange structuring desk in Paris for Calyon.

You are in something of a unique position: not only are you a former graduate and one of the most popular teachers on the program, but also each year some students do their placement or find their first job in your team. In your view, what are the strong points of International Finance SM students?

Specialized Master students combine excellent capabilities in mathematics with in-depth financial knowledge. And since the program places as much emphasis on market finance as on corporate finance, alumni are to be found in all the high added-value finance professions: trading, structuring, sales, risk management, research, quantitative, fund management, mergers and acquisitions, equity capital market, structured financing, project management.

What advice do you have for a student who wants a career in the world of finance?

The profiles and ambitions of students wishing to make a career in finance are many and varied, but I think there are two key points:

  • Choose a high-quality training course so that you start your career in the right conditions.
  • Try to work in positions that allow you to continue to learn, even after several years’ experience.
