Abstract: 

We draw on the literature on complex network analyses to empirically characterize inter-sectoral technology spillovers. Using data on over 1.3 million patents granted between 1976 and 2010 across all sectors of the economy, we find a significant increase over time in the centrality of the information and communications technologies (ICT) industry as well as in the “closeness” of non-ICT industries to the ICT industry in inter-sectoral citation networks. Further, the “closeness” of an industry to the ICT industry in the network space is associated with superior R&D outcomes, notably, greater innovative efficiency or patents per R&D dollar and greater recombinant capabilities. On average, a unit increase in the closeness of an industry to the ICT industry yields a 13% increase in innovative efficiency, 74.19% increase in recombinant reuse, and 12.12% increase in recombinant creation capabilities. In addition, the same increase in closeness for an industry increases its performance spread by 11.11% and performance volatility by 20%. Our results emphasize a fundamental shift in knowledge production and the important contribution of the ICT industry beyond productivity growth to include innovation that is fundamental to firm competitiveness.

 

Bio: 

Professor Deepa Mani is a faculty in the Information Systems area, and Research Fellow at the Indian School of Business. She is also the Executive Director of the Srini Raju Center for Technology and the Networked Economy at ISB. Deepa’s research interests are at the intersection of technology, organisation, and society. She is interested in studying the organization of IT and IT-enabled business functions in firms, and assessment of the business value of a broad class of IT decisions and interventions. Her research articles have been published in leading academic journals and extensively featured in refereed conference proceedings, edited book chapters, and popular media outlets. Deepa works closely with industry to drive innovation and strategies for the digital economy. She also works closely with the central and state governments to explore the impact of technology interventions in areas such as education, healthcare and urbanization.
 
Deepa serves as an Associate Editor for Management Science and Information Systems Research. Deepa completed her undergraduate education from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University and her graduate education from Carnegie Mellon University. She received her doctorate degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
