Strategies for Russian and International MNCs following Russia’s Accession to the WTO. Joint conference of GSOM SPbU – HEC Paris Moscow, October 4-5, 2012

3 October 2012

Moscow – October, 4, 2012 St. Petersburg University Graduate School of Management (GSOM SPbU) and HEC Paris will hold an international management conference and debate on «Strategies for Russian and International MNCs following Russia’s accession to the WTO” under the Patronage of H.E. French Ambassador to the Russian Federation Mr. Jean de Gliniasty at the French Embassy in Russia.

The strategy of Russian and foreign multinational corporations depends on many factors. Russia's accession to the WTO - a significant, but not the only factor that determines corporate’s strategy.
In the short term, due to a reduction of tariffs, foreign companies are less interested in having production facilities in Russia, it becomes less crucial. Business strategy will be more focused on development of service infrastructure, dealer networks, and logistic systems. The latter may become the key factor of competitiveness of MNC in Russia. Strategy of direct investment in Russia could make sense only in case of MNCs focus on the CIS countries, including the Customs union. Corporate business diversification strategy with network logic of value creation in the global economy may be regarded as the most relevant in current global business environment.

Strategically for Russian and International multinationals business development should be based on strategic advantages of different order.
For Russian MNCs – due to their presence mainly in energy and raw materials production – The most relevant strategy will be to improve competitiveness, deep penetration into CIS markets, as well as focus on regional and economic integration.
