The Resort to Belgium of French people with Autism

E. Walwer, 29 March 2015

[AMO publication] Facing a major lack of appropriate support structures for autistic people in France, many families with an autistic child turn to Belgium as a last resort to find a support solution. This phenomenon is completely financed by France. Through different interviews of parents whose child is or has been taken care of in Belgium, this work focuses on how the Belgium experience could impact the parents’ commitment and on the possibility that the parents’ perception of a higher quality support in Belgium could trigger an entrepreneurial dynamic. Such a research implies the analysis of the causes of such an “exile” and of its consequences for the families concerned.
