FAQ

Course of Study

I don’t speak French. Can I study at the HEC MiM / Grande Ecole program?

Yes, mandatory courses (Year 1) are taught both in English and in French. Students will be asked to choose their language of instruction before the start of the course. Students may also choose to take a combination of the courses. Electives are taught either in English or in French. Students with an intermediate level in French are encouraged to join at least one elective taught in French.

Specializations (Year 2) are taught either in English or in French/English.

Can I study French while studying at HEC Paris?

Yes, all international students are offered the possibility to join a French language course and to prepare for the TEF (Test d’Evaluation de Français) according to your level (beginner, intermediate or proficient).

HEC Paris Learning Center of Languages is also the perfect place to learn or strengthen French and many other languages.

If I have already studied one of the mandatory courses, may I apply for exemption?

Yes, if you realize that the syllabus/content is exactly the same as the course that you have already studied, the Professor responsible for the course, may exempt you from the course upon application from the student. However, we encourage students to take the course as the teaching methods, case studies, group work and personal work may differ from the course that you have studied previously.

What is the Gap Year? Is it mandatory?

The Gap Year, a one year break between M1 and M2, is not mandatory but is an option that most of the students choose. This is a unique opportunity to spend one year in the workplace in order to gain professional experience and extra exposure on your CV. It is also an opportunity to ‘test’ a particular field of activity, a time to consider changing career and goals and to think about your choice of specialization.

When do I apply for my specialization?

Students who do not wish to take advantage of the Gap Year will apply in the February of their first year of studies. Presentations of all the specializations will have been made in the December and January.

Students who take advantage of the Gap Year will apply during this year.

What are the Double Degree opportunities?

HEC offers all students the possibility to apply for a Double Degree offered in collaboration with our partner universities. Students apply during their first year of studies or during their Gap Year. See the dedicated section.

What programs can I follow after my third year at Polytechnique?

As part of an agreement between Ecole Polytechnique and HEC Paris, all students from the Ecole Polytechnique who have followed the Year 3 of the Ingénieur Polytechnicien Program can apply to one of programs below:

To apply for one of these programs, please contact Anne-Marie Le Gall at Polytechnique. Then fill in the online application on https://admissions.hec.fr/en.

Mandatory Additional fees:

Admission: General Information

Who can apply for the HEC MiM / Grande Ecole program?

The HEC MiM / Grande Ecole program welcomes applications from young and motivated candidates of all nationalities holding a University degree of at least three years having obtained 180 ECTS.

The HEC MiM / Grande Ecole program is a complete education in general management and therefore admissions are open to candidates from various fields of study (engineers, social sciences, sciences, arts, etc.), with little or no professional experience.

Applicants may apply for the HEC MiM - Grande Ecole program during the same year that they obtain their degree.

How does the online application system work?

First you have to create an account at https://admissions.hec.fr/en and then begin to fill in your application. You are able to submit an application when:

  • your application form is 100% complete
  • you have uploaded all the required documents
  • the online reference forms have been received by HEC Paris
  • you have paid the application fee of €100

For SAI candidates, please refer to the SAI website.

What are the deadlines to apply to the HEC Paris MiM-GE program?

We hold 5 Admission Rounds for a single entry in September.

Your complete online application must be submitted prior to 11:59PM (French Time) of the deadline.

For SAI candidates, please refer to the SAI website

What is the admissions process?

  1. Eligibility:
Once the application is validated and the required documents have been uploaded to your HEC Paris applicant space at https://admissions.hec.fr/en, the admissions team assesses the eligibility of the candidate’s application form. They check the conformity of the candidate’s experience and documents with the eligibility conditions of the program.
  2. Admissibility:
The admissibility results are published on your HEC applicant space following the screening of all eligible applications.  For SAI applicants, the results will be available through our website. Admissible candidates are invited to take part in an admissions interview, a 20-25 minute interview in English either by Skype or on campus. Candidates are encouraged to discuss their unique background, motivation, interests, and goals during this interview.
  3. Admission:
The admission results are published on your HEC applicant space following the interview and admissions jury (6 to 8 weeks after application deadlines. See admissions calendar).
  4. Integration:
Admitted applicants must confirm their place by payment of the acceptance fees before each admission round’s relevant financial confirmation deadline.

Is it better to apply directly to HEC or through the SAI?

This is a difficult question to answer and depends entirely on each candidate’s individual desires.

If you are only interested in applying to HEC Paris, then we advise you to choose the direct admission route: https://admissions.hec.fr/en. By applying through HEC directly, you will be given the opportunity to choose a second choice from our range of Masters programs.

If however, you would wish for your application to be processed by the other 4 French Management School members of the SAI consortium in turn, with the opportunity of gaining a place at one of these institutions, please apply through the SAI.

Please note that there is no preference from HEC Paris and that your application will be processed in the same manner either way. Furthermore, we insist that students choose only one admissions route i.e. if you apply directly to HEC, you cannot apply to the SAI (and vice versa).

Only one application will be processed per candidate per year for each program unless there has been considerable changes to the information submitted. If an application is submitted both through the SAI and through HEC directly, only the first validated application shall be processed.

Do you offer Spring or Winter entry?

No, HEC Paris only offers a full time Master program which begins in the September of each year.

What is the difference between the Admission Rounds and if there is a disadvantage in applying for a later Round?

There is no difference between the Admission Round criteria. All Admission Rounds are for a single entry in September. As there are no other entry points, we encourage you to apply early as the number of places are limited and admission is highly competitive.

In what language should the online application form be filled out?

The application must be filled out in English

Do I need to speak French to join HEC?

No, while speaking French when applying is not mandatory, students are invited to register for a French language course (TEF certificate - all levels).

I have started an online application for an admission Round but I am not ready to submit it by the given deadline. What should I do?

You are able to transfer your application from one Round to another if you missed the deadline. For this, please log in to your applicant space, click on "Edit choice" and choose an alternative Round. Please check your program's Admission Calendar for the list of Rounds available.

Can I apply to more than one Master Program at HEC?

Yes. When filling in your application form, you can make 2 choices for the same Round. If you apply for two programs, your first choice is your preferred one.  Your second choice application will be transmitted for review only if your preferred first choice application is unsuccessful.  Please note that there is no specific calendar for your second choice and these applications will normally be dealt with in the following Admission Round

I wish to apply for more than one program, should I submit 2 applications?

Yes. You have to fill in 2 different applications and upload separate sets of documents for each. Your second choice application must be complete in order for both first and second choice applications to be submitted.

After submitting my application, how can I be sure it is complete and taken into consideration by the Admissions Office?

An email notification is sent to you to confirm your application has been successfully validated and your status will change to 'submitted' on the My Space page. If you do not receive an email receipt from us nor see this status change, this means that we may not have received your application.  If any items are missing or if we have any questions or need further information, we will let you know at this stage.

Can I add new information if I have already submitted my application?

Once you have submitted your application, you will no longer be able to modify it except for the "Personal Information" section.  If invited to the interview, applicants may inform the Jury of other updates at that time (test scores, internships etc).

When should I check the system after submitting the application?

To track the progress of your application you should login to your application twice:

  1. On the Interview Admissibility publication date (see the Admission calendar) to know if you have been shortlisted for an interview and if so, book an interview slot.
  2. On the Admission publication date (see Admission calendar) to know if you have been offered admission*

(*) Please note that these dates concern your first choice master. If unsuccessful to your first choice application, your second choice application is transmitted for review.
Second choice applications will normally be reviewed in the following Admission Round.

Who reviews the applications?

After being processed by the Admissions Office, the application is reviewed and evaluated by the Academic Director of the program you are applying for. Finally, the applications are reviewed by the Admission Committee set up by the Dean of HEC Paris, the Associate Dean, the Admissions Director and Academic Directors of HEC Paris Master Programs.

What is the review process if I made 2 choices of programs?

If you apply for two programs, your first choice is your preferred one.  Your second choice application will be transmitted for review only if your preferred first choice application is unsuccessful.  Please note that second choice applications will normally be reviewed in the following Admission Round.

When is my second choice reviewed and when will I get the results?

There is no specific calendar for your second choice. Second choice applications will normally be reviewed in the following Admission Round.

How are the admissions criteria weighted?

The Admission Committee bases its decision on the strength of the application as a whole. If one area is a little weak, it might be overcome by outstanding attributes in another.

Admission: Management Tests (GMAT, GRE, TAGE MAGE)

Is the GMAT or GRE or TAGE MAGE mandatory?

Yes, you are required to provide a test score for one of these three tests unless you are applying for one of our Double Degree programs where specific criteria apply (See your programs supporting documents section).

Do you have a preference in terms of which test (GMAT or GRE or TAGE MAGE) to take?

We do not have a preference.

Can I apply before I have taken GMAT or GRE?

No. In the least, your unofficial score available on the test date must be uploaded to your application form by the deadline. Incomplete applications cannot be submitted.

Do you accept unofficial GMAT or GRE test scores?

No.  You are advised to wait until your application is complete including the official management test scorecard (test taker copy) before submitting.

If on the deadline date, you have still not received the official score results, we will exceptionally take your unofficial GMAT or GRE score given on the day of the test or a screenshot of your GMAT or GRE score from the respective websites.  Once the official scores are available to you, they must be scanned and sent by email to hotlineadmissions@hec.fr.  The HEC admissions team takes no responsibility for updating non-communicated scores.

How can I report my GMAT or GRE or TAGE MAGE score?

  • For the GMAT, instruct Pearson VUE to send your official GMAT scores directly to the HEC Paris Master Programs (HEC Paris code is OTL-6C-89).
  • For the GRE, instruct Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send your official scores directly to HEC Paris (HEC Paris code is 3623, choose any department code).
  • For the TAGE MAGE, HEC Paris will verify your score directly with FNEGE. There is no reporting procedure to be made by the applicant. Please ensure your TAGE MAGE test is taken before the application deadline.

Neither the official, nor the non-official GMAT/GRE test score is available to me by the deadline. What should I do?

You will not be able to submit your application, as it must be complete by the application deadline. Therefore, we encourage you to transfer your application to a next Round if available. Round 4 is the last admissions Round available in a selection year (See I have started an online application for Round 1 but I am not ready to submit it by the given deadline. What should I do?)

What is the last day I can take the GMAT/GRE/ TAGE MAGE?

We recommend that you take the GMAT/GRE/TAGE MAGE test at least 2 weeks in advance of submitting your application.

Can you confirm receipt of my official GMAT/GRE score?

No, we cannot confirm receipt of your official GMAT/GRE score. Please check with the test organizing institution you have designated the HEC Program code to receive your scores. We only contact you if the official scores did not reach HEC before the admission results are made available to applicants.

Is it possible to waive the GMAT/GRE/TAGE MAGE for any reason (e.g., important work experience, already having a PhD, etc.)?

No. All applicants are required to submit valid test scores for either the GMAT, the GRE or the TAGE MAGE.

For how long are GMAT, GRE, TAGE MAGE scores valid?

GMAT, GRE and TAGE MAGE scores are valid for 5 years and must be taken before submitting your application.

Is there a minimum GMAT/GRE/TAGE MAGE? How are multiple test scores considered?

There are no minimum required or minimum cut-off scores for applying to the HEC Master Programs. We accept applicants with a wide range of scores. If you have taken a test several times, the Admissions will consider only your highest score when reviewing your application.

I have taken my test more than once, do I need to submit the most recent?

No, if you have taken your test more than once, you can choose to submit your highest score

What is the median GMAT?

The median GMAT for the last intake was 710.

What is the average TAGE MAGE?

The average TAGE-MAGE for the last intake was 440.

I have a low score. Should I still apply?

Yes. We consider all elements of your application, so it is important that you make each element as strong as possible. An average GMAT, GRE or TAGE MAGE test can be offset by other positive points in your application file. In some cases, a management test retake may be requested by HEC Paris.

I have taken both GMAT and GRE score. Can I send them both?

No. Only one test will be taken into consideration by the Admissions Office. It is the applicant’s responsibility to choose which test will be submitted in the application.

Admission: Supporting Documents

What is a Certificate of Attendance?

A Certificate of Attendance is a document provided by your University that confirms your student status, program of study, level and duration of program.

What if my Degree/Certificate of Attendance/Transcripts is neither in English nor in French?

You must have the Degree/Certificate of Attendance/Transcript translated by an official translating service. You must upload both the original and the translated version compiled in one single document.

I have participated in study abroad or exchange programs. Do I need to provide transcripts from these months/years?

If you have attended study abroad programs or exchanges, please include these transcripts, if available, as a single .pdf document with the other transcripts when uploading this document.

My CV is more than one-page, do I need to rewrite it?

Preferably, a one-page CV should be submitted as this avoids any information being overlooked by our Admissions Jury and Interview Jury.

We do accept two-page CVs scanned as on PDF document but no longer than two pages max.

Should I attach a Motivation Letter, either hand-written or typed?

A Motivation Letter is not required; we request an uploaded copy of your CV and a completed Essay Section for application validation, which are of utmost importance.

An additional Motivation Letter is not compulsory and will not affect the processing of your application.

But I really want to send you my Motivation letter?

In the past, some candidates have still wanted to include a copy of their Motivation Letter with the CV scan to provide further information they felt was not covered in the Essay section.

If you wish to add this document to your application, we would prefer a one-page maximum, computer-generated copy rather than a hand-written letter.

How can I submit my documents?

The required documents must be scanned and uploaded in the "Supporting documents" section of your application. The online application system allows for documents to be uploaded in PDF format only and your photo in .jpeg version only. When converting paper documents into electronic .pdf files, make sure:

  • the file doesn’t exceed 30 MB
  • the format of your files is the A4 (210 x 297mm) ISO standardized format (8.3 x 11.7 in)
  • scan all multi-page documents into one PDF file for upload (ex. All Transcript pages should be scanned and saved into one file)

This should be achievable by using the correct scanning settings.

After you upload your documents, preview the pages to make sure that the pages are clearly legible. If not:

  • Re-scan the pages
  • Save them again
  • Delete the documents in the appropriate field
  • Upload the re-scanned documents

My documents exceed 30 MB? What should I do?

To reduce the size of the file, please try one of the following

  • Lower the resolution
  • Reduce the height and width of the image
  • Scan in black and white
  • Scan your documents into .jpeg format first and then convert them into pdf files (right click then select Convert into pdf format), rather than scanning them directly into pdf format.

How can I submit my transcripts?

Transcripts must be scanned and uploaded to the application as a single PDF file. Please, do not mail the hard copy of your transcripts. You may upload an “unofficial” or student copy of your transcripts. However, we will request an official copy for verification purposes should you be admitted to HEC Paris.

My transcripts contain more than one page. How can I upload them into a single uploading space provided for this document?

If your transcripts have multiple pages, they must be scanned into a single PDF document before uploading. You will not be able to upload transcript pages individually.

Is there a minimum GPA requirement to apply?

No. There is no minimum GPA requirement to apply for variances in grading systems around the world.

How do I calculate my GPA if my university or college does not provide one?

For each degree, enter the grade using the grading scale of your GPA (grade point average) indicated on your transcript (ex : 3/4, 7.1/10, 82/100). If you do not have any average for your degree, you have to calculate it.

Admission: Essays and Work Experience

I have written a letter of Motivation, why do I need to fill in the Essays?

The Essays are an important part of the application and the questions asked focus on highlighting the specific qualities valued by the Jury.

Can I enter the same Essay answers for my two program applications (if applicable)?

The Essays are supposed to reflect your motivations and projects relative to the program to which you are applying.  Thus we strongly advise you to adapt your answers to each application.

How do you answer these short essay questions?

Please do not exceed 1000 characters for each essay. The Admissions have many applications to go through and appreciate short, well-expressed essays. By limiting the answers to 1000 characters we hope to avoid receiving general statements and to make you focus on specific points that only you could have written and therefore, allowing your unique personality to show. To make your point quickly using only the most precise words is a part of our writing test.

Are internships considered as work experience?

While we recognize the value of internships, they are not considered to be professional work experience. The internships information must be detailed on your CV (Resumé).

Will part time jobs be considered as work experience?

Yes.

Admission: References

How can I complete the References section?

Applicants enter recommenders’ names and email addresses into their online application. Recommenders then receive an email providing further instructions on how to proceed with the online reference.

How many references should I have?

We require 2 reference forms sent through your online application. A maximum of 3 may be sent.

And what if I have made 2 choices?

The online reference forms in your first choice application will automatically be used for your second choice application.

Who should I ask to recommend me?

Recommenders should be professors who know you well. However, if you are unable to provide 2 academic references, one may be from an employer.

Can my employer complete the online reference form?

Yes, if you have more than 2 years of work experience and your employers know you better than your professors.

How do I know if a referee has accepted or declined my invitation?

In both cases, whether he/she accepts or refuses to complete the online reference form, you will be notified by email. Accepting does not mean completed. Please ensure the forms are filled in and submitted by the reference providers before the deadline. It takes 5-10 minutes for a referee to fill in the form.

Both you and your referee are notified by email when the forms are successfully submitted.

What questions does the online reference form include?

The reference form sent to your referee contains questions on your abilities, academic performances and leadership potential.

How can I track my reference form status?

You can track the status of your existing References requests from the "References" section of your application. Each request will be listed in one of the following statuses:

  • Request sent to referee
  • Request accepted by referee
  • Request declined by referee
  • Online form filled in by referee

An email notification is sent to you at each stage.

Will I be able to submit my application if the reference forms are not yet completed via the online application?

The online reference forms are required for submitting the application. You are responsible for ensuring that 2 recommendations are submitted online prior to the application deadline. That is why, we recommend you fill in the “recommendation section” as early as you can, so as to give them as much time as possible to receive the form and recommend you.

Can my referees submit the reference forms after the application deadline?

Yes, if they have at least accepted the Recommendation invitation.  Please remember that this means that your application may be reviewed incomplete by the admission jury. Everything from you and the referees needs to be submitted by the deadline.

My referee has not received the invitation to complete an online reference form. What should I do?

It is possible that the invitation went directly to their spam box. Please double check this with them.

Three days after originally entering and submitting their details, you will be given the opportunity to resend through your space.  To do this you should go to the "References section", click on "mail" link situated below your referee contacts, copy and paste the text appearing into an email and send it through your personal email account.

My referee will not be able to provide recommendations in time? Can I ask another referee?

Yes. You can delete the request, fill in the new referee contact details and submit the new request.

Do you accept hard copies of reference letters?

No. We only accept completed reference forms via the online application. No hard copies will be accepted.

Admission: Application Fee

How much is the application fee?

  • Direct HEC Paris candidate application fees are €100 (CEMS Network candidates are exempted from the application fee) and can be paid online from your admissions space.
  • For candidates applying through the SAI, the application fee is €180, and must be paid to the SAI when you submit your application.

I have made a second choice? Do I need to pay the application fee twice?

No. You pay only once whether you apply for 1 or 2 Masters in the same application Round.

It is possible to waive the application fee?

No. The application fee is waived only for:

  • Applicants from China Pre-selected Universities Schools and HEC Partner Institutions

Admission: Interviews

Who is invited to take the interview?

Only Admissible (shortlisted) applicants are invited to take the interview.

When should I expect an invitation for an interview?

To know if you are Admissible and invited to take the interview, you have to connect to your Applicant Space by the Admissibility Results Date (see calendar).

How do I schedule an interview?

The day the admissibility results are made available, you are invited to choose, via your applicant space page, your interview date, time and type (on campus or by Skype). Once you are offered an interview, it becomes a required part of the application process. Please register for an interview slot online as soon as possible as the slots are offered on a first come first served basis.

Is there a preference from HEC on how to conduct the interview (on campus or by Skype)?

For students residing in France, the effort to come to meet us will be appreciated.

For international students, we understand that Skype is more convenient in most cases.

Where do interviews take place?

  • If you have applied directly to HEC you can choose to come to HEC campus or have a Skype interview.
  • If you have applied through SAI you will undergo the interview in one of the 70 centers worldwide

For SAI candidates, please refer to the SAI website.

What kind of questions may I expect during the interview?

The main objective of the interview is to explore the quality of the match between the objectives of the applicant and what the program has to offer. We not only want to select the best candidates but also make sure that HEC Paris is the best next step for them. You should thus definitely expect career-related questions. We are keen on getting students who are passionate meaning we also frequently ask questions about recent business news. Other questions may depend on your profile: as we want to get to know you better, we will certainly ask about the most striking experiences on your CV, be they professional or extra-curricular.

How can I best prepare?

The purpose of the interview is to better understand your motivations for our programs. But it is both evaluative and informative. It is not only an opportunity for us to learn more about you, but also for you to learn more about HEC Paris.

I have not been selected for the interview. May I get a feedback of why this happened?

No. We do not provide such feedback.

Do you provide interview feedback?

Admission: Final Decision

How are the admission decisions released?

The admission decisions are released via the applicant space. Please note that in cases where you have applied to multiple programs, you will have a separate decisions shown for each application you have submitted.

What are the types of admission decisions?

When reviewing an application, the Final Admission Jury will make one of the following decisions:

  • Admission: we offer clear admission to highly qualified applicants pending confirmation of their official academic degree/transcripts and test scores.
  • Conditional Admission: we offer conditional admission to applicants who clearly demonstrate significant potential for success but who we feel need additional improvement on the application. The Admissions office informs each applicant individually of the requirements or conditions that must be met before the student will be offered full admission.
  • Waiting list: applicants can expect to remain on the waiting list until the following rounds of decision are released. There is no rank order to the waiting list. This policy is designed to create an admission process that is fair and equitable for all Admission Round applicants.
  • Non admission

How long do candidates typically remain on the waiting list?

Applications can be re-reviewed by the Admissions Committee at any time, but this typically happens between March and June. Applicants may be offered admission, their waiting list status may be extended, or they may be released and encouraged to reapply the following year.

How many applicants are placed on the waiting list?

The number of candidates placed on the waiting list fluctuates from year to year, depending on the size and quality of the applicant pool.

How many applicants are offered admission from the waiting list?

Whether we admit from the waiting list and the number of candidates admitted varies, depending on application numbers and enrollment for a given year.

Does HEC Paris rank the waiting list?

HEC Paris does not rank applicants on the waiting list. Instead, each wait listed applicant's file is reviewed and compared with other admitted applicants.

Admission: Unsuccessful Applications

Will HEC provide feedback for unsuccessful applicants?

No, the Admission and Admissibility committees form their decision upon the overall context of the applicants’ pool and therefore cannot make specific feedback as to why certain applicants have been unsuccessful on this occasion.

May rejected students reapply for the same term entry?

Yes. But we generally do not encourage it.  We will only reconsider your application if there is some new information which adds significant weight to your reapplication. If there is no new information, no purpose can be served by reapplying.

I have applied last year to this program unsuccessfully. Can I reapply?

Yes. If you decide to reapply for the intake of the year after your original application, you have to resubmit an entirely new application. It is your responsibility to ensure that all sections are newly completed.

Is the application fee waived for re-applicants?

The application fee is not waived for re-applicants.

If I’ve been denied admission, may I appeal the decision?

According to the HEC Paris Admission rules, the admission decisions are final and there is no process for appeal.

If you have not successfully completed the process by this time, you will not be allowed to enroll at HEC Paris.
