Having the opportunity to share the classroom with some of the best students from the top universities worldwide has been undoubtedly one of the best aspects of my time at HEC Paris

While my profile is somewhat different to most of my peers in the MFE program, I am extremely satisfied with my experience both in the program and at HEC Paris in general. Perhaps what differentiates me most is my background: I had previously completed a double degree in engineering at EPF Ecole d’Ingénieurs in France and Tec de Monterrey in Mexico, so despite the fact that I had a previous international experience, I lacked a background in finance and economics.

Diverse student backgrounds

This however was never an issue. The courses were indeed very demanding, but I never felt at a disadvantage because of my background. The remedial classes offered during the first weeks are really helpful in accelerating the catching up process, and offer a good insight into the concepts and tools that are used later on. The program’s professors were always aware of the different profiles in our class, and were not only very accommodating in clearing up any questions, but even incentivized this diversity because of the different perspectives it brought into the classroom.

My background was different not only because of my previous degree, but also because I already had full-time work experience for many years, both as a private consultant and as an adviser for the Mexican Congress, while most of my classmates had only completed internships. Although there was certainly an age gap in relation to the class average, I can sincerely say that having the opportunity to share the classroom with some of the best students from the top universities worldwide has been undoubtedly one of the best aspects of my time at HEC Paris. I have not only built long-lasting relationships, but I have also learned a lot from my fellow students, which is something I believe everyone joining should be open to, despite their age.

A world-class education

As for my personal motivations coming into the program, I was looking for the opportunity to complete a professional transition into finance and economics. While I had already taken on work responsibilities related to these fields, I felt that it was important for me to pursue a formal degree in order to deepen my knowledge and bolster my profile. I was specifically interested in a program that covered both finance and economics, not only in order to better understand these topics individually but also the relation between the corporate world and global macroeconomic issues.

These expectations have been largely fulfilled. There is no question that HEC Paris is one of the best schools in the world, so successfully completing one of its degrees is a great way to boost or reorient a career. Moreover, the mixture between finance and economics in the MFE course load is carefully managed in order to cover both topics equally. The learning is taken outside of the classroom too, as we have received the opportunity to attend conferences and study trips to meet both with industry and academic professionals from all around Europe. These measures have greatly contributed in balancing theory and application.

As I move forward, I will continue my career with a more complete profile that builds upon my engineering background with working knowledge on finance and economics, an extensive and diverse network of former peers, and an international experience which has granted me a multicultural perspective. These assets will without a doubt be helpful in the future.
