HEC Paris continues support of prestigious case writing competition

7 January 2013

HEC Paris in Qatar – the region’s leading hub for Executive Education, offering a complete portfolio of management programs including the first ever international Executive MBA (EMBA) in Qatar – has announced its intention to sponsor a business writing competition organized by the European-based management development network EFMD.

EFMD is an international management development network which is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. It is comprised of more than 750 member organizations from academia, business, public service and consultancy in 81 countries. It represents a unique forum for information, research, networking and debate on innovation and best practice in management development. It is recognized globally as an accreditation body of quality in management education, with established accreditation services for business schools and business school programs, corporate universities and technology-enhanced learning programs.

For the last 30 years, EFMD has been organising a yearly case writing competition. The aim of this competition is to encourage the writing of case material involving European companies and institutions as well as material dealing with topics concerning other geographical areas which are generally underrepresented, which includes the MENA region.

Committed to developing knowledge in the region, HEC Paris in Qatar is pleased to announce its sponsorship of this competition, for the second year. The winners of the individual categories are decided by a jury. For the 2012 award, two members of the HEC Paris faculty were members of the jury: Gerard de Maupeou and Karine Le Joly, along with the Academic Dean of HEC Paris in Qatar, Prof. Antoine Hyafil.

The winning submission for the MENA category was entitled: ELIE SAAB: Growth of a Global Luxury Brand, by Lebanese/American Nadia Shuayto.

Dr. Shuayto’s winning contribution was an examination of the meteoric rise of the Lebanese designer Elie Saab and the launch of his fashion label in 1982 in Beirut, when he was just 18 years old. The winning piece went onto describe in business and marketing terms how Saab’s progress from an individual studio in Lebanon now sees Elie Saab as a multinational haute couture fashion house whose creations have been worn by royalty such as Queen Rania of Jordan and celebrities like film stars Halle Berry and Angelina Jolie.

Dr. Nadia Shuayto is currently working as Associate Dean at Lawrence Technological University in the College of Management. She is an Assistant Professor of Marketing and Director of the MBA program.HEC Paris in Qatar’s Academic Dean, Prof. Antoine Hyafil, commented, “The EFMD is a hugely important organization and, within that, the yearly case writing competition is also an important constituent.

“In particular, the MENA category allows participants to expose and promote all the talent that exists here. The prize itself is important and the prize money, no doubt, is welcome, but more important than this is the exposure that the MENA region gets from winning submissions that meet the requirements of the jury and show the rest of the world the entrepreneurial spirit and excellence that can be found all over the Middle East.

“Applications for the 2013 prize are now closed and we’re sure that among them are some exceptional pieces of work. The judges are now evaluating the cases for the 2013 competition, and winners will be announced by the end of April,” added Prof. Hyafil.
According to the influential UK-based Financial Times media group, HEC Paris has been ranked as one of the top Business Schools in Europe since 2006, and was ranked second in the world for Executive Education in 2012.
