Abstract

There is no question that covid was a shock to the way we work. We saw a massive increase in the scale and scope of remote and hybrid work alongside “the great ‘re-‘(-signation, -organization, -think)” and quiet quitting – all of which involved significant shifts in both the mechanics of the day to day execution of work as well as larger, more fundamental shifts in how people relate to their employers. Discussions with executives (and even the quickest glance at the management press or social media) make it clear that these changes persist and organizations are struggling to align their working models with employee demands.

Making decisions more complex, leaders face competing objectives (performance vs. staffing vs. social dynamics) as well as tradeoffs between short vs. long-term as well as individual vs. collective outcomes. In this session I will present a theoretical frame we have designed to capture these tradeoffs as well as a measurement tool and preliminary data. Please note, this research is very much a work in progress and this is intended as a working session to discuss preliminary hypotheses, kick around ideas, and hopefully generate new ideas for the direction we take this work!
