Netexplo Forum 2016: the digital innovations that are pushing the biological, robotic and relational limits

The 10 digital innovations with the most potential to have a strong impact on society and the economy were presented at the 2016 Netexplo Forum on February 10th 2016 by Julien Lévy, Affiliate Professor at HEC Paris. Artificial intelligence, human enhancement, Internet of things, robotics or blockchain: the best of the forum’s 9th edition found its focus in the boundaries and limits that are increasingly and being overcome by digital.

Julien Lévy - Netexeplo Forum 2016

Over the last nine years, through its partnership with HEC Paris, the Netexplo Forum has been highlighting the emerging global uses of digital and the main trends that are going to have an impact on society and the economy. Netexplo also act as a source of inspiration and a means of anticipation for the decision-makers who will be facing up to the digital transformation in the world of politics, economics, academia and media.

Chosen from 100 of the world’s most promising digital initiatives (Netexplo 100) by a digital innovation spotter network made up of some 20 top American, Asian, African and European universities, including HEC Paris, the 10 laureats for 2016 were presented on the 10th February 2016, during the Netexplo Forum. Affiliate Professor and Director of the HEC Paris Digital Center, Julien Lévy, put the innovations into perspective by identifying three principal trends: Bio-Stretching, Stretching the Machine and Stretching Interaction.

Bio-Stretching: Liberation from biological constraints

Augmented bodies, bionics and bio-hacking: the digital revolution is shattering the boundaries between biology and technology, at the same time as making science more popular. The transhumanism which aims to utilize technology to augment our physical and intellectual capabilities is at the center of these new uses.

Stretching the Machine: when machines break free

Robotics are becoming more popular and are breaking into everyday life with fresh ambition, which is adding to the mechanical performance of artificial intelligence. Connected objects are becoming intelligent objects, and artificial intelligence is steadily closing the gap between human intelligence. Could robots soon overtake us?

Stretching Interaction: A new landscape in relation to the scrapping of interaction costs

On one hand, the presence of larger networks and technologies in our daily lives makes our social lives more technological in nature. On the other hand, we are witnessing the emergence of a new model, founded on the cutting of transaction costs in economic relations. The collaborative economy, founded on the fall in transaction costs requires big businesses to rethink their methods of operation and production. The blockchain also illustrates this trend: the network and the protocol are replacing the institution.
