Abstract
"Scientific editors are the gatekeepers of science, who collectively shape the content of academic journals and set standards for their field of research. In this talk, I will present a series of studies that focus on two aspects of scientific editors: 1) the gender and racial composition of editorial boards, and 2) the competing interests of academic editors. By constructing two large longitudinal datasets of academic editors, I provide empirical evidence to questions such as: Who are underrepresented on editorial boards? Why are they underrepresented? Do academic editors handle papers when they have a conflict of interest? If so, what is the effect of conflict-of-interest policies? These research projects leverage randomized baseline models, natural experiments, and network embedding models to answer causal questions using observational data."
