Biography

Matteo Winkler graduated in 2001 from the Catholic University of Milan, Italy, with a dissertation on the international regime of electronic commerce. He then worked as a lawyer and was admitted to the Bar of Milan in 2006. At the same time, he pursued an academic career with several publications in Italian, English and French, and with going in depth with various fields of international law, taking a Ph.D. in International Law & Economics from Bocconi University in 2007. He also obtained an LL.M. (Master of Laws) from Yale Law School, also in 2007. He both worked in an international law firm and taught at Bocconi University School of Law.

Matteo’s research interests span from public international law to conflict of laws, including dispute resolution, trade law, Internet law and family law. He focused, through a significant number of publications, on international human rights, LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) issues and international commercial arbitration.

While at Bocconi University School of Law, for five years Matteo taught international law and European Union law. Meanwhile, he was called by major Italian universities and bar associations to give speeches in a large number of conferences regarding topics connected with arbitration, litigation, LGBT issues, Internet law and family law.

Matteo is member of the Board of Editors of Diritto del commercio internazionale, a prominent Italian journal in the field of international commercial law. He is also member of the Scientific Committee of various book series such as Mimesis LGBT (Mimesis) and Liminalia (Kaplan Editions). He is also a keen member of the no-profit association Avvocatura per i Diritti LGBTI – Rete Lenford, which led important antidiscrimination lawsuits before Italian courts, and an active blogger in Italy for civil rights and fundamental freedoms.
