The seminar aims to explore the use of conditionality to ensure the respect for the Rule of Law through economic and budgetary instruments. It will bring together researchers and experts in the area of European economic governance and values of the European Union. Participants will discuss several challenges raised by economic and budgetary instruments in the fight for the Rule of Law: the links between budgetary conditionality and fundamental rights, the process by which the Rule of Law is protected by economic and budgetary instruments – that can be described as “economization” of the Rule of law – and finally the politicisation and democratisation of European economic governance.
