Strategic Management Study Trip 2026: Learning Strategy Where It Happens

This October, HEC in the UK welcomed over 90 students from the Master in Strategic Management programme to London for the annual study trip — four days designed to turn theoretical frameworks into tangible, real-world understanding. For many participants, this marked their first sustained exposure to one of Europe's most dynamic business hubs.

The programme kicked off with an alumni networking evening at HEC UK House, setting the tone for what would become a recurring theme throughout the trip: direct access to people who have actually lived the career paths students are only beginning to consider. Graduates now working across London shared candid accounts of their own trajectories; the pivots, the setbacks, the decisions that shaped their careers, giving students a far more grounded sense of what awaits them beyond graduation than any case study could offer.

The days that followed were built around company visits and discussions with industry experts. Rather than observing strategy from a distance, students were placed directly in front of the people making high-stakes decisions — watching firsthand how theory translates (or sometimes doesn't) into practice under real market pressure. Each visit added a different lens: a different sector, a different set of constraints, a different definition of what "strategy" actually means on the ground.

What distinguishes this trip, year after year, is the strength of the network behind it. The HEC in the UK Office has spent years cultivating relationships with alumni and industry partners across London, and that investment shows — students didn't just visit companies, they were welcomed into conversations that most graduates wait years to have. The result is a cohort that returns to campus not only with notes, but with a far more concrete sense of where they might fit in the professional landscape ahead.

As the business world continues to shift, the HEC in the UK Office is already looking toward next year's cohort, committed to keeping this experience sharp, relevant, and firmly grounded in the realities students will soon face.

John Mawdley

“The London trip was an exceptional immersive experience, allowing students to take in different business environments and anticipate what their future career might look like. Through inspiring company visits and networking events, they gained valuable insights and connections that will support them both throughout their Masters program and their early career. The trip also enabled students to strengthen social ties with their peers, which can provide an important foundation for increased collaboration and learning during their coursework.”
