Abstract: This seminar aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of gender diversity in childhood, starting with the basic concepts needed to grasp individual sexual identity. We'll explore how gender diversity manifests in childhood, look at the emotional experiences of their families, and identify the strategies families and professionals use to navigate children's gender nonconformity. Using a multidisciplinary approach, we'll cover key psychological, sociological, and cultural perspectives, giving participants a well-rounded view of the challenges and dynamics involved in supporting transgender children. Participants will engage with research findings to build the knowledge and empathy needed to create inclusive and supportive environments for gender-diverse children and their families.

Speaker: Michela Mariotto, cultural anthropologist with a Ph.D. in social psychology, currently a researcher at the University of Roma Tre. Her studies focus on queer theory and (trans)gender studies. She is also a co-founder of GenderLens, an association that provides space for research and discussion on gender diversity in childhood and support for families of transgender youth.
