Prof. Brian Hill

CNRS Research Professor - Economics and Decision Sciences

Brian Hill is Research Director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and Professor in Economics and Decision Sciences at HEC Paris.

Brian investigates how to tackle severe uncertainty or ambiguity in high-stakes decisions, drawing on and developing resources from the philosophy of rationality and the economic decision sciences.

His work has practical consequences for decisions and uncertainty communication in areas like environmental policy.

Brian’s other core research program centers on the consumers’ pro-social attitudes. It uses tools from economics and behavioral sciences to examine how information about social characteristics of goods can shape behavior and help mitigate social injustice.

He has published in top economics, philosophy, management and climate journals, including American Economic Review, Econometrica, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Economic Theory, Management Science, Mind and Climatic Change. He is a recipient of the CNRS Bronze Medal for early-career researchers.

He is also a voice in public debate, contributing op-eds to outlets such as Project Syndicate, Le Monde, The Conversation, and Les Echos on topics including regulation and competitiveness, consumer information, inequality, and navigating contemporary uncertainties.

In his leadership role, Brian Hill is Academic Director of the Inclusive Economy Centre in the Sustainability & Organizations Institute (S&O) at HEC Paris. In this context, he has been involved with innovative pedagogical approaches, such as the Business & Human Rights Research Clinic in collaboration with Schneider Electric.

In a word, Brian’s mission is to apply novel insights and perspectives, based on rigorous theoretical analysis and empirical data, to unlock pressing societal challenges, from navigating severe uncertainty to mitigating social injustice.
