Biography

Arnaud VAN WAEYENBERGE is a professor at HEC Paris, where he teaches European Union law (both institutional and substantive), global law, and legal reasoning. He also serves as the academic director of the “Law” major (SFJI) and the double degree in “Business Law” offered jointly by HEC Paris and Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.

His research focuses primarily on four key areas:

  1. European internal market law (including technical standardization, carbon markets, AI regulation, investment arbitration, CSRD/CS3D, and the free movement of capital);
  2. European constitutional law (with particular emphasis on the EU’s response to the rule of law crisis);
  3. European defense integration; and
  4. the European Union as a laboratory for new forms of normativity.

In this context, he is currently involved in several major research projects at both the national level (notably under the French National Research Agency – ANR) and the European level (Europe 2030 initiative).

He also serves as President of the Perelman Centre and is a visiting professor at the College of Europe (Bruges) and the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB).

Before joining HEC Paris, he worked as a lawyer at the Brussels Bar (Clifford Chance LLP) and as a référendaire at the General Court of the European Union.

Arnaud VAN WAEYENBERGE holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Law from UCL, a Master’s degree in Legal Philosophy from the European Academy of Legal Theory, a Master’s in EU Law from the College of Europe, and a PhD in Legal Sciences from the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), for which he was awarded the Seghers Prize.
