Yasir Dewan: Understanding firms in their social and political environments
Yasir Dewan has been a member of the Strategy and Business Policy Department since 2019. His research views firms as embedded in a dense network of sociopolitical institutions, including regulators, courts, the media, social movements and ranking organizations, that shape corporate conduct and its consequences.
Dewan investigates how social status and political ideology influence firms’ relationships with these institutions. His work sheds light on issues such as corporate scandals, regulatory enforcement, and media coverage of firms. In his recent work, he has explored how and why firms lobby the courts as well as how the use of science and coalitions allow firms to obtain judicial outcomes aligned with their competitive advantage. His research has been published in the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, and Research in the Sociology of Organizations.
Alongside his research, Dewan teaches the core Strategic Management course in the Grande École Master’s program and Non-Market Strategy in the PhD program.
