Research shows that activist campaigns tank financial performance over a five-year period — meaning both shareholders and stakeholders ultimately suffer, writes the Financial Times. 

The study, conducted by researchers at Pennsylvania State University’s Smeal College of Business and HEC Paris found that while there was an initial 7.7 per cent uptick in the value of companies within the first 12 months of being targeted, value steadily declined, dropping by 4.9 per cent four years later and continuing on a downwards trajectory after that.

A study published in January by Augustin Landier of HEC Paris Business School, Jean-François Bonnefon of Toulouse School of Economics, and Parinitha Sastry and David Thesmar of MIT Sloan, showed that investors are willing to pay $0.7 more for a share in a company giving one more dollar per share to charity, writes CNBC. 

The study also revealed that firms exercising a negative social impact were valued at $0.9 less per share than those considered socially “neutral.”

“The U.S. travel ban against the EU Schengen is a politically motivated, and largely ineffective measure,” comments HEC Paris Professor of European law Alberto Alemanno, in an interview for CNBC.
