Beyond borders and disciplines - Bianca Vitcu’s journey through the BASc in Data, Society & Organisations
When Bianca Vitcu left her hometown of Iaşi, Romania, to pursue the Bachelor of Arts & Science in Data, Society & Organisations - a joint program run by Bocconi University and HEC Paris - she was stepping into a whole new world. Coming from one of Romania’s most competitive high schools where she focused primarily on mathematics and computer science, she was no stranger to rigorous academic study. But this program, with its unique blend of data science, social sciences, and international exposure, promised something entirely different.
Now, after completing her first year in Milan, Bianca reflects on an experience that has already shaped her personally, academically, and professionally.
Choosing a Bachelor built for the future
“The main reason I chose this program,” Bianca explains, “is because the subjects we study will be relevant for most future jobs.” In a world where career paths are evolving rapidly and unpredictably, the BASc in Data Society and Organisations provides the kind of interdisciplinary foundation that future-proof careers are built on.
For Bianca, the interdisciplinary nature of the degree was also a big draw. “You don’t just study data or just study politics,” she says. “You study both, and you learn how they interact.”
And the fact that it’s a dual degree between two prestigious institutions - Bocconi and HEC Paris - was a major advantage in her eyes. “You get to discover two different countries, two universities, and two approaches to learning. It gives you a broader perspective on the same subjects.”
An international community that feels like home
Moving from a relatively homogenous high school environment to an international classroom has been one of the most enriching parts of Bianca’s journey so far. “In high school, everyone was from Romania, and mostly from my city. Now I’m meeting people from all over the world.”
The class dynamic is defined by diversity and collaboration. While some students come with strong backgrounds in data and mathematics, others bring strengths in politics or languages. “Even if we’re different, we help each other. Everyone brings something to the table,” she says. Whether studying for exams or working on group projects, there’s a real spirit of teamwork.
Her experience of living in a student dorm has also been transformative. “I had to learn how to live with people who aren’t family - how to share, adapt, and be more responsible. That was one of the biggest challenges, but also a great part of my personal growth.”
Highlights, challenges, and what she’s learned
The first year of the BASc in Data Society and Organisations has been a whirlwind. “It feels like I just started yesterday,” she says, smiling. But in that short time, Bianca has learned to adapt to a whole new academic rhythm. “Back home, I knew how to approach every subject. Here, I had to find a new way of studying.”
The program has taken her out of her comfort zone - especially the society and politics courses, which were entirely new to her. “In Romania, I didn’t really study global politics or history in depth. It was a bit scary at first, but I ended up loving both subjects. The professors have made it accessible and really interesting.”
The program included several group projects that involved applying theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios. These included collaborative work in areas such as coding, data visualization, machine learning, data analytics, and economics. While these projects offered insights into practical applications and fostered teamwork, the core of the academic experience remained grounded in rigorous theoretical frameworks and analytical problem-solving.
Why she recommends the BASc in Data Society and Organisations
When asked if she would recommend the program to others, Bianca’s answer is immediate: “Definitely.”
She believes the program is ideal for anyone who is strong in one field - technical or not -and wants to broaden their horizons. “You discover more about different subjects, but also more about yourself. You might be good at something you never thought you’d enjoy.”
For students unsure of their future path, this degree offers flexibility and breadth. “It gives you more options - whether you want to go into the job market, do an MBA, or pursue a Master’s. You’re prepared in all sorts of fields.”
Looking ahead - testing the waters in consulting
Although Bianca hasn’t yet decided on a specific career, she’s using her time in the program to explore and test different paths. This summer, she’s heading back to Romania for a one-month internship at a consulting firm in Bucharest.
“I chose consulting because I want to see what it’s like. Maybe I’ll enjoy it. Maybe I’ll want to go in a different direction. But I need to try to find out.”
And while she’s not yet sure whether her future career will involve heavy data analysis, she believes that the rational mindset and problem-solving skills she’s developing will be valuable in any field.
A fast-paced and transformative first year
As her first year draws to a close, Bianca feels proud - and a little amazed- at how much has happened. From mastering new subjects and adjusting to life in Milan, to building friendships across cultures and discovering hidden strengths, it’s been a year of rapid personal and academic growth.
With her second year at HEC Paris still ahead, Bianca is eager to embrace what comes next. “I’m happy with my choice, and I’m excited to see what’s left to discover.”
