A year that changed everything - Tom van Maastricht’s HEC Paris journey
What does it really feel like when one extraordinary chapter comes to an end and a new one is just about to begin? We asked some of our amazing Master’s students to write an open letter to themselves on the eve of graduation – to step back and reflect on their first days at HEC Paris, the challenges they’ve faced, the friendships forged, and the transformation they’ve undergone.

Tom van Maastricht, a Master in International Finance student, takes us back to the day he arrived in Paris, full of hope and anticipation. What follows is an honest, warm, and deeply personal letter to his past self. It captures the beauty of everyday moments, the pressure of ambition, the strength found in community, and the bittersweet feeling of closing a chapter that has changed everything.
Dear Me,
I still remember the 19th of August, the day I arrived in Paris, a week early to soak in the city and practice my French. Exploring the beautiful streets, visiting the highlights, and meeting the first people from my program (and beyond), I had a feeling this year was going to be something special. And it truly was.
Those first two weeks were a whirlwind. I met so many people that I had to keep a list of where I met them, just to make sure I wouldn't forget anyone’s name. Everyone was so open and welcoming.
At the same time, the serious side of the MIF program hit fast. Within days, everyone was deep into internship applications, especially for London. I got pulled into that wave too, even though I wasn’t truly invested in those roles. But looking back, it wasn’t wasted energy. Preparing for interviews and assessment tests became a way to bond, to laugh through the stress, and to find the people I would grow closest to.
The program itself was intense; there’s no denying that. But I don’t look at it negatively. I learned a lot, and more importantly, I had time to enjoy life. Living on and around campus meant that my friends were always nearby. Whether it was late-night talks, spontaneous dinners in Paris, or just bumping into each other on the way to class; those were the moments that made this year unforgettable.
There were so many highlights. The cantuses we organized with the Benelux association. Long dinners with good wine and even better company. And most unexpectedly, meeting my girlfriend on campus.
It’s hard to believe it’s over. I’d do it all again in a heartbeat. But I’m also looking ahead with excitement. By the time you're reading this, I’ll have started my internship in Paris, in exactly the field I hoped for, in the city I dreamed of.
So, thank you: friends, professors, and HEC Paris. Thank you for shaping this incredible life experience.
With gratitude,
Tom van Maastricht
Tom’s words remind us that growth isn’t just found in lectures halls or job offers, but in laughter shared, lessons learned the hard way, and even unexpected love stories.
His journey is uniquely his own, yet deeply familiar to anyone who has ever started something new with equal parts excitement and anticipation. As he steps into the next chapter of his life with gratitude and confidence, his message lingers - the experience was fleeting, but its impact will last a lifetime.
