Prof. Arnaud Van WaeyenbergeArnaud Van Waeyenberge is Professor of Law at HEC Paris, President of the Perelman Centre for Legal Philosophy, and Visiting Professor at both the College of Europe (Bruges) and the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Prior to joining HEC, he practiced law at the Brussels Bar (Clifford Chance LLP) and served as a référendaire at the General Court of the European Union. He is an expert in European Union law.
His research and teaching focus on two main strands of European Union law. The first, more foundational, examines the EU’s legal and institutional responses to the rule of law crisis in several Member States.
The second, more practice-oriented, investigates the environmental and digital transformation of the internal market - covering topics such as carbon markets, AI regulation, the CSRD/CS3D directives, and the evolving regime of free movement of capital - with a particular emphasis on enhancing the legal protection of stakeholders.
In line with his commitment to bridging scholarship and public engagement, he regularly publishes, lectures, and speaks at conferences across Europe. He has published in La Libre Belgique, justice-en-ligne.be, and The Conversation.
He is currently involved in several major research projects at both the national level (including under France’s National Research Agency – ANR) and the European level (notably through the Europe 2030 initiative).
His research has appeared in leading journals such as European Law Journal, Common Market Law Review, Journal of International Economic Law, International Comparative Law Quarterly and Cahiers de droit européen.
His most recent publication, co-authored with Zac Davies, is titled “Better Regulation by Standards? Harmonized Technical Standards, Transparency, and the Rule of Law” (2025), Common Market Law Review, Vol. 62, Issue 1, pp. 147–174.
