King Lear: Three Questions to Ask Before a Family Business Succession

In the June 2026 issue of Investissement Conseils, Alain Bloch, Caroline Nicolas and Anne-Sophie Cambay revisit Shakespeare's King Lear as a fable about succession. Written around 1605, the play portrays an aging king who divides his kingdom among his three daughters before withdrawing: an opening scene that turns to disaster, and whose consequences the play unfolds across five acts. 

Through this analysis, the authors draw out three questions King Lear never asked himself — "What am I really passing on?", "Who will I be when I am no longer king?" and "Whom did I leave no place for?". So many questions that serve as a reminder that a family business succession does not play out on legal, tax, and wealth-planning grounds alone, but also in the place each person holds, leaves, or is granted. Asked in time, they can make the difference.
