The Odyssey of Space Innovation Catalyzed by the CDL Space Stream
Space, once reserved for government agencies and elite scientific institutions, is now rapidly transforming into a thriving arena for commercial innovation. As the space industry opens up to private enterprise, it is unlocking unprecedented opportunities in areas like telecommunications, Earth observation, and satellite technologies. At the core of this shift lies the driving force of innovation and entrepreneurship, essential not only for advancing technology but for ensuring the long-term survival and prosperity of humanity.
Let’s explore these subjects through the lens of Chris Hadfield, colonel in the Royal Canadian Air Force and former combat pilot, author, and Founding Fellow of the CDL Space Stream at the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL). As CDL-Paris celebrated its 5th anniversary, the HEC Paris Innovation & Entrepreneurship Institute had the unique opportunity to sit down with the astronaut renowned not only for his achievements in space exploration, but also for captivating the world with his iconic rendition of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” performed live from aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Why did he choose to invest his energy in CDL? What is the mission behind the CDL Space Stream, and how is he helping to fuel a new era of breakthrough space technology? Let’s dive in.

Creative Destruction Lab (CDL): A Unique Ecosystem for Massive Impact
The Creative Destruction Lab is far more than a traditional accelerator or incubator.
“CDL is an environment to incubate ideas into full fledged businesses, that can grow massively and have enormous impact.”
- Chris Hadfield
Over the past seven years during which Chris Hadfield has been deeply involved into CDL, the initiative has established itself as a unique, highly structured environment designed to transform innovative ideas into fully operational companies with massive growth potential and the ability to generate high impact.
The success of the Space Stream is a powerful testament to this approach: In just a few years, the CDL Space Stream has already facilitated the creation of nearly $3 billion in new equity value. A big figure reflecting CDL’s extraordinary ability to identify, nurture, and launch high-potential projects in the space sector.
Chris Hadfield’s continued commitment to Creative Destruction Lab stems from a deep conviction, standing behind the CDL mission: helping big ideas grow to change the world, while also helping everyone involved learn and grow together. Teamwork and shared success are at the heart of CDL.
The Key Role of Mentorship and Collaborative Support
One of the cornerstones of CDL’s effectiveness and remarkable success is its mentorship model and comprehensive support for entrepreneurs. Hadfield emphasizes the immense value of intellectual exchange: “Every single mentor knows a whole bunch of things I don’t know. So I can dig into their brains and have a look at the brilliant ideas they come up with, and then see if some of my experience can help them grow in a domain I’d never have ventured into myself.”
A statement that perfectly captures the CDL’s collaborative philosophy: a crossroads where the deep expertise of mentors meets the raw innovation and bold vision of technical or scientific entrepreneurs, creating a uniquely powerful synergy. It’s a two-way street: learning flows in both directions, and the richness of shared knowledge is a key driver of project growth and maturity. This mutual learning and exchange of knowledge help ideas grow faster and turn into real, impactful projects.
Beyond this invaluable exchange, CDL offers a full spectrum of operational support critical for the growth and sustainability of early-stage ventures. A multifaceted approach which is quite important, especially for startups in capital-intensive and complex domains like space. Indeed, these companies need far more than funding: they require strategic roadmaps, deep understanding of a shifting regulatory landscape, and strong go-to-market strategies.
Innovation as an Existential Imperative: Building a Sustainable Future
For Chris Hadfield, innovation is an existential necessity. He states this with unwavering conviction: “The world will never stay the same. External forces will continue to change, and for the survival of our species, we absolutely must continue to prioritize innovation.”
In a world facing unprecedented challenges (climate change, resource scarcity, exponential population growth…) technologies from space innovation and other CDL verticals (streams) are indispensable. Indeed, investment in commercial space is a proactive strategy to unlock new frontiers in global connectivity through advanced telecommunications and to manage Earth’s precious resources more intelligently via satellite observation. This demands an unrelenting focus on innovation and a profound recognition of our shared responsibility as a species. Because the ultimate quest is not to build successful companies, but “to craft a sustainable future for 10 billion people with a high quality of life”, as Chris Hadfield stated.
The Legacy of Innovation and the Need to Win for Future Generations
“Life is a competition, and we must win.”
- Chris Hadfield
To “win” means to innovate transformatively, create sustainable solutions, and ensure long-term human prosperity. It calls for a culture of excellence, resilience, and relentless improvement, traits deeply embedded in every startup within CDL. It’s a continuous challenge to adapt, innovate, and build a future where high quality of life is reachable and sustainable for all.
Chris Hadfield’s engagement through the CDL Space Stream embodies a powerful and forward-looking vision of innovation. It marks a decisive shift from a state-dominated space era to a dynamic, entrepreneurial landscape rich with opportunity and transformative potential, where Creative Destruction Lab’s unique model serves as a powerful engine for this historic transition.
About the CDL Space Stream
For founders pursuing commercial space opportunities, addressing the inherent challenges of accessing and utilizing space sustainably, with a focus on ensuring the long-term viability of space activities.
CDL Space is an international program based out of CDL-Paris, CDL-Texas, CDL-Milan, CDL-Toronto for pre-Seed to pre-Series A technology startups and designed to support both space and Earth-based technology.
The program brings together astronauts, entrepreneurs, investors, and scientists from fields related to space exploration and transportation, satellite communications, Earth observation, automation, and robotics. CDL startups work with these mentors to sharpen objectives, prioritize time and resources, raise capital, build networks and engage with experts working on the frontiers of research.
