Business and Climate Change

Marc-Goldfield

In a dynamic, global world, I would highly recommend this course for anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of some of the most fundamental, pressing issues of our time

Do you know why oil dominates the global energy mix? The difference between power and energy? What the challenges and opportunities are for renewables in the next 50 years? If these are the types of questions that fascinate you, then I would highly recommend this program.

This specialized course provides an overview of the energy industry through the lens of finance, yet due to the global scope of the subject, is multidisciplinary, ranging from geopolitics to economics. This is a unique opportunity to learn from one of the industry’s leading experts as well as a number of highly-renowned guest speakers. Rather than bogging students down too much with abstract economic and financial theory, the professor presents a very practical view of the industry. Over the span of two weeks, we covered a broad range of subjects from commodities trading, gas and oil contracts to climate change policy and carbon tax. At the end of the session, we presented case studies in groups on some of the most pertinent issues facing the industry.

In applying standard finance and economics concepts to a real industry, this has greatly enhanced my understanding of principles that I have learned at the undergraduate level. The international summer school experience at HEC is of a very high quality and has been a nice complement to my Masters degree.

In a dynamic, global world, my experience leads me to highly recommend this course for anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of some of the most fundamental, pressing issues of our time.
