majamaja is disconnecting building from the grid

Station F x HEC Incubator - majamaja

On Thursday, June 27, the autonomous French-Finnish house majamaja discreetly took place in front of Station F. This was not a question of staking a claim or competing with the world’s first start-up incubator, but rather an occasion to show visitors and curious people how an autonomous housing solution works, at the occasion of the 2nd birthday celebration of  Station F.

The structure will be maintained until mid september 2019 and daily visits for land owners and real estate professionals are organized on appointment.

Tuomas Autio, co-founder and Director of majamaja, currently incubated at the HEC incubator, explains his project to us: "We inaugurated the 1st eco-home in total autonomy on the occasion of the Open House celebrating the two years of Station F, and we are using this exhibition to show how this housing can operate off-grid and in total autonomy!" “Our goal is to find dream locations and project partners for majamaja ecovillage projects in France and worldwide !"

MajaMaja launch

majamaja is an autonomous French-Finnish housing solution for sustainable land development projects. It uses advance off-grid technology for green energy storage and closed loop for rain and grey water purification. The units are made of 100% wooden built prefab elements that can be brought on-site and assembled without heavy machinery. This allows the units to be assembled in the most remote locations.
The powerful solar energy storage feeds the water purification system and other house appliances such as lighting, fridge, microwave-oven, TV and optional air-conditioning. Heating is provided by nonpolluting natural gas and toilet waste is filtered, composted and used as an on-site land fertiliser.

The founding team is composed of five people, with three technicians, a designer and a business developer, and based in Helsinki and Paris. Integrated into the Station F community and the HEC incubator since 2017, they naturally chose Paris to launch the concept, explains Tuomas Autio: "Paris is a very interesting territory in terms of urban development and construction, with major projects underway such as JO2024, Grand Paris... The mentalities are open and there are many initiatives for innovation such as the Reinventer Paris, FAIRE competitions, etc. »

According to Pekka Littow, a Finnish architect and inventor of the concept, MajaMaja is a concrete solution:
“The inspiration for the project comes from the Finnish archipelago, it’s human scale building tradition and the life harmony between humans and nature. In respect to this foundation, we apply a holistic approach that combines green energy use, clean water autonomy and a circular water clean-up, with resource-optimised and functional space-use. This combines with the use of healthy building materials, timeless aesthetics and high-quality finishing”.

The first majamaja village in Helsinki in autumn 2019

majamaja is involved in sustainable land use planning projects outside of existing infrastructure. This approach avoids environmental damage caused by pre-construction works such as connecting to the water network, sewage or road construction.

After two years of testing on a Finnish island, majamaja opens its pilot village for short-term rental in autumn 2019.
