Prof. Alberto Alemanno, named "Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum

Among 187 entrepreneurial leaders; heads of state, CEOs, Olympic gold medalists and Nobel Prize winners, Alberto Alemanno, Professor of Law at HEC Paris is named "2015 Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum (WEF). Alemanno’s nomination was prompted in part by his work toward innovating legal education via the Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) on “Understanding Europe.”

Each year, the WEF recognizes distinguished leaders under 40 from around the world for their professional accomplishments, commitment to society, and potential to shape the future through their leadership.

Alberto Alemanno is Jean Monnet Professor in EU Law and Risk Regulation at HEC Paris. He is also Global Clinical Professor at New York University School of Law where he directs the HEC-NYU EU Regulatory Policy Clinic and a scholar at the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University Law Center. Prior to joining the HEC faculty, he clerked at the Court of Justice of the European Union, worked as a Teaching Assistant at the College of Europe in Bruges and qualified as an attorney at law in New York. 

He is one of the leading experts in the areas of EU law & policy, risk regulation and global health and is an emerging public interest lawyer. Alemanno regularly provides advice to a variety of organizations, such as the World Health Organisation, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the UN International Trade Centre, the European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority and the European Court of Auditors as well as governments across the world on various aspects of European Union law, WTO law and international health law.

Originally from Italy, Alemanno is a graduate of Harvard Law School and the College of Europe, and and holds a Ph.D in International Law and Economics from Bocconi University.

He the recipient of the 2011 Chauncey Starr Distinguished Award by the Society for Risk Analysis for the most exceptional contributions to the field of risk analysis by a scholar aged 40 or under as well as the 2013 ECTA Award for the best paper dealing with intellectual property rights in Europe (Plain Packaging of Cigarettes under EU Law). In 2012 he received the EMBL Outstanding Teacher Award by the University of St. Gallen.
